Erica, here are some additional responses:

- Gateway Community College in Connecticut, the chapter purchases a stole, honor cord, and tassel for each graduating officer only. Other members are responsible for buying their own items. The chapter takes orders before the International Convention and buys stoles for interested members there in order to help them save on shipping costs.

- Landmark College in Vermont currently gives a stole, cord, and tassel to each graduating member but is considering tying in an active membership component (like Manchester's system described above).

- Massasoit Community College in Massachusetts gives out the stole and tassel to students who have documented 80 or more hours of service through the chapter or in their community.

- Asnuntuck Community College in Connecticut gives stoles to all members. They do not give out cords because those are already provided by the college to students who have received honors in their programs.

So it looks like the smaller chapters are able to pay for stoles for members, but larger chapters and those with limited finances only give them to chapter officers and/or members with documented service hours. I hope all of that helps you make some decisions for moving forward!

Hello all,

At Nashua Community College, we encourage the students to purchase their stoles, but we do lend some out. When the students borrow stoles, they sign for them. That helps them remember to give them back. Our budget does not have money for stoles, so we can't give them to anyone. I wish it were different and it is something that we are looking into (we have just been changed from a club to an activity).

Of course, we also have to be very careful to go to the after-graduation reception and do our best to collect stoles.

Thanks,
Susan

Erica, I put your question out to the Regional Advisory Board, and here are two replies I've received so far:

- Nashua Community College's chapter does lend out stoles, but students have to sign an agreement saying that if they don't return the stoles, their degree will not be listed on their official transcripts. The college agrees to that since it's considered a debt to the institution. That has worked well for them since the threat is enough to ensure the stoles come back. Their chapter also encourages members to buy their own stoles instead of borrowing.

- The Community College of Rhode Island's chapter gives out gold tassels in a special ceremony the day before graduation. Members are only given stoles in exchange for service to the chapter. They also sell stoles at their tassel ceremony as a fundraiser and put reminders about buying stoles and other regalia in their newsletters leading up to graduation.

If I get any additional replies, I'll let you know!

The system we use in the Alpha Upsilon Alpha chapter at Manchester (CT) Community College is that no one automatically receives free regalia, even on loan. Our membership numbers are simply too large for us to do that, especially with limited funding. We also believe that part of being an honor society is having to put in some honorable work up front in order to receive something good in return.

We have a tiered system that requires members to work for their regalia. I don't have the rubric right in front of me, but it's something to the effect of:

- 25 hours of commitment to the chapter: Free tassel
- 50 hours of commitment to the chapter: Free tassel and cord
- 75 hours of commitment to the chapter: Free tassel, cord, and stole

Students are given a "logging chart" as soon as they're inducted so they can keep track of their hours. We let them count hours spent at meetings, running informational tables, attending Relay for Life (an easy way to get a tassel!), baking items for bake sales, going to regional events, writing meeting minutes, etc. It's all basically done on the honor system, and students can simply bring their sheets to our advisers in the week or so before graduation to pick up their items. Even though our advisers aren't going to go back and verify every single hour they put down, the fact that students have to log it all and put it in writing makes them more accountable, so no one abuses it.

If students don't put in the hours, it is their responsibility to order their items and pay for them themselves via Recognitions. As a student (now alumna), I felt that was more than fair. It ensures steady, active involvement in the chapter and it also teaches you honors must still be worked for even after your initial induction.

I'll post this thread on our regional Facebook page and encourage people to come here if they have any other suggestions. Good luck!

Hi Everyone,
What I usually do is purchase regalia and loan it to my students to wear for the graduation ceremony and pictures. My dilemma is how to get all the regalia back from all the students after graduation. I never finish with as many cords and stoles as I started with!
Any advice is much appreciated!

That's an awesome question, Erica! Can you clarify a bit what you mean? Do you want to purchase regalia for yourself, or are you trying to find a way to purchase items for your chapter? If you can help us understand exactly what you want to do, we can probably give you lots of suggestions. :)

Hello, New England!

The Regional Convention website will be launched this week, so even though chapters have not registered yet, I thought I would start our annual roommate finder thread so people can start thinking ahead. If you are planning to attend the 2011 Regional Convention at Landmark College and want to save money on rooms, post here to connect with others who might be looking for roommates. Chapters have very successfully used the board in the past to pool their resources, so please feel free to do the same!

A big thank you to all of you who were involved with the officer training!! The group of us from Central Maine Community College had a blast, learned alot and left more confident than we arrived, in our book it was a complete success. We are all looking foward to our next chapter meeting where we can pass on what we took from the training. On the drive home we spent the time excited and discussing the plans to attend the leadership conference coming up in Oct. Once again thank you for the effort it was well worth our time.

Thank you to both Michelles and Susan who made the business/health breakout sessions very interesting and relevant.

Did you know that by simply reading the newspaper, you could win $500? I did it in 2008, and I'd like to help you do it as well!

Phi Theta Kappa's Honors Case Study Challenge gives members and chapters the opportunity enhance our understanding of the Honors Study Topic through simple reading of the newspaper at your leisure and then writing a very simple, brief case study about your discoveries.

Here's how it works:

1) Read USA Today between Monday, July 6, 2009 and Friday, February 19, 2010. (You do NOT need to read the paper every day!)

2) Select four or five articles on a single topic related to the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Study Topic, "The Paradox of Affluence: Choices, Challenges, and Consequences." (You get to pick your subject! Write about health care, educational access, urban poverty, or anything else that intrigues you.)

3) Write a one-page Case Study summary and a paragraph about the future implications of your topic. (This is no more than 700 words total, so it's very short!)

4) Pose three to five discussion questions related to the topic and suggest up to six resources for additional study. (Additional resources might be books you've read on the topic, or maybe even relevant movies you've seen.)

It sounds like a lot, but I promise -- it's not at all! On top of that, if you pick a topic you're passionate about, it's very fun!

You can choose to participate on your own or with your chapter. If your submission is one of the four winning entries, you'll receive:

- A $500 stipend (to use any way you'd like if you're an individual; to use for Honors Study Topic programming if you're a chapter)
- Publication by USA Today through their on-line education section
- A plaque from Phi Theta Kappa and USA Today
- Recognition on-stage at 2010 International Convention at Walt Disney World

If you'd like to see what a case study looks like, here's my winning entry from 2008. That one simple case study not also earned me all of the above, but also an additional $1,500 grant for further research, an opportunity to travel and present my findings at an academic conference, and an internship in my field! (Read more about my experiences after the Honors Case Study Challenge.)

If there's any way I can help you participate in the Honors Case Study Challenge, please let me know. I would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have, or even lead a workshop at your campus for your chapter. I hope you'll consider taking the Challenge!

This past weekend your 2009-2010 Regional Officers meet for their weekend training. We had a great weekend of learning, planning and bonding. Your officer team is very excited to start working for you.
Our first goal is something that each and everyone of you may and your chapters can assist with.
Goal #1:
To provide support for our chapters by working with them to creat the 1st New England Region Chapter Resource Manual and start a "sister" chapter initiative.

Your chapter will soon be contacted by one of the Regional hoping that you will be willing to share in your chapters success story. We will be looking for any procedures, lists or tactics used in achieving your successes. If you have any of that information and would like to share, please feel free to e-mail your Vice President or me.
We understand that International Headquarters provides a Chapter Resource Manual, but we as Regional Officers feel that we could add to that and make it more personal to the chapters within the Region.

Goal #2:
Create a Regional Honors in Action Project based on the needs of our chapters communities.

Again when a Regional Officers contacts your Chapter, they will be asking what your community may be in need in reference to Operation Green: Improving our Communities. We hope that you will be very candid with each officer. This will be be only way that your Regional Officer can create a Regional Project that will have an effect on each and every chapter.

Goal #3
Continue to raise money for the Hites Foundatio. Every dollar will be matched my $2 by the Hites Foundation.

We will use the Chico Bags to continue raising those funds along with other fundraising methods. If you have interested in purchasing some of these Chico Bags, $5/bag, please contact your Regional V.P.

I hope that we can do as great of a job at serving the Region as the past Regional Officers have done. Please always feel free to contact any of the Regional Officers at any time. We hope that we can get you as excited about this up coming year as we are!

Chapter officers and advisors, plan now to attend the Honors in Action Chapter Officer Academy and the Advisor Education Conference this summer!

On July 18, the region will be coming together at Massasoit Community College for a 1-day, intensive (but fun!) training session to prepare for the 2009 - 2010 year. This is a "must-attend" event for all chapter leaders who are looking to enhance their skills and lead their chapters to greater success next year.

Registration is only $10 per person, and that includes a catered lunch. (Ooh, lunch!) We have some really amazing plans in the works and hope you will join us. This is a rare opportunity to learn about chapter leadership and planning from experience alums, so we hope you take advantage of it!

Visit http://www.neptk.org/nera/projects/summer-academies for more details. :) See you in Brockton!

Ashley's right. This is a great topic Jill!

We all experience stress in our life whether we're in school, on the job, or raising a family. Stress usually comes from a sense of feeling overwhelmed. What do I do when stress invades my life?

First, I take a deep breath (maybe two). Then, focusing on one task at a time, I do the very best I can. Evaluate what needs to be done, then prioritize.

When I was in school, I discovered that it was better for me to take a break when I was tired rather than pushing through another hour of studying. After a short period of "me" time, I came back to the books refreshed and clear-headed.

Once you realize you've done all you can do, let it go. Breathe that sigh of relief. And remember, the semester is almost over and you're one step closer to graduation.

Great topic, Jill!

For me, stress is a particular challenge because I am one of the almost 20% of Americans with an anxiety disorder. College students -- especially traditional college-aged women -- have one of the highest rates of anxiety disorders, so I have to work especially hard to keep my anxiety in-check while in school.

Here's something you may not know about me: As an agoraphobic, I am literally terrified; of being in large groups or having the focus of a room on me. (Among other things, it makes me feel dizzy and like I literally can't breathe. If that sounds familiar, I would be happy to help direct you to information on more clinical help.) Even still, I've been able to work through that anxiety over the years, especially through Phi Theta Kappa, so that I'm now able to function really well in those situations. Except for when I'm messing up behind a microphone, most people don't even realize that I have anxiety issues! So even people with myself who have diagnosed acute anxiety disorders, there is help and hope, and you can get through it!

One of the most important things you can do for yourself when stressed is to challenge the negative thinking that's provoking and furthering the stress. Anything in life can make us anxious, which is a normal and healthy response, but when it starts evolving into full-blown anxiety and severe stress, it's usually because of our pattern of thinking. These cognitive distortions -- like mentally exaggerating problems we're experiencing to make them seem terrifying, or telling ourselves that anything less than "perfection" is unacceptable -- can lead to really terrible consequences if we don't recognize and "check" them early on.

Even though I have dealt with severe anxiety issues since childhood, I've been able to go on to achieve many things most people would only dream of. I have total faith that Phi Theta Kappans can get through their finals-related stress and have a much more relaxed academic experience -- as long as they remember to combat that negative thinking once it starts!

I would also really like to recommend two resources for students:

1) GotAnxiety.org is a website offered by the Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA) that is designed especially for college students coping with school-related stress. It's a great website to visit for direction to more resources that can be helpful at this time of year.

2) Me. :) If stress is a problem for you or your chapter, please feel free to contact me and I will be more than happy to speak with you and help you determine some great coping skills to work through anxiety. I also offer an interactive workshop called "Being a Stress-Free Scholar: Balancing School, Life, and You," which I am happy to present to chapters that might be interested. This topic is obviously very near and dear to me, so please let me know if I can help in any way.

There is definitely no shame in anxiety, and I believe it's incredibly important for those of us to deal with it every day to not feel shame. We need to share our stories to help reassure others that it really is all okay, and things will work out fine. :) I hope many of you who have anxiety challenges will work hard to conquer them, because you can -- and I'm rooting for you. :)

I definitely like to exercise this time of year. Vitamin D is an essential vitamin when it comes to kidney function, bone growth, skin and nail health, and most importantly, overall happiness. If for some reason I can't exercise I head down to the beach and just relax.

For me a destressor is going out for a walk with my IPod. Weather this great helps with being able to go outside. If I can't go for a walk, than I LOVE to sit in my outside swing and listen to the birds.
I also like to make sure that even in the most hectic days, I take at least 15 minutes out for myself. Whether it is to internet surf or watch my favorite show on TV.

Becoming a regional officer was one of the most important decisions I made during my education. I learned how to be a leader, I learned how to listen, communicate with a variety of people, and most of all I learned about who I was and how to achieve my goals. I suggest everyone run for regional officer at least one and see where the journey takes you. :)
